The Cabanon / A.I.R.

For the Artist In Residence / Route de Champagne 2019,  the organisers proposed as group project the transformation of a cinderblock cabin located upon the main artery of Ville-Sur-Arce. Limited to donated material and ’48 hours’ construction time we 8 artistes each submitted concepts for a group endeavour. My proposition payed attention to the limits set out in the brief; seeking maximum effect with minimum material while offering a friendly and methodic construction system.

The concept is intended to blur the identity of the original structure which appeared raw and chaotic like a wart on the landscape. Where lies the identity? Is the structure for the curtain? – Or is the curtain for the structure? The horizontal pattern of the vineyards is displaced onto the vertical plane, as a curtain swaying slightly in the breeze upon a rythme of plumb and level. Red tips were chosen to represent the labour and devotion of the winemaker’s travails in the fields.
